Probably the one most important detail in any water feature is moving the water for aeration to prevent stagnation of the water. This can be accomplished in several ways. An air stone with an air pump can be installed, a water fountain can be installed, or a nice backyard waterfall can be installed.
Providing absolutely no aesthetic value the air stone is by far the easiest and most efficient way to aerate a pond or pool. Go to any pet store pick up an air pump, an air stone or two, a length of hose, and connect them together. Then simply throw the stone into the water plug in the pump, and your done.
A water fountain is not as efficient for aeration but will add greatly to the appearance of any water feature. Water fountains are available in many shapes and sizes. Lights can be added for night viewing and enhancing the look of any water fountain.
The backyard waterfall is by far the most attractive and the most alluring of any water feature. The waterfall provides an origin for any water feature. Your backyard waterfall can be stand alone, feeding a stream, or feeding directly into your pond or pool.
Your backyard waterfall can be a very clever attachment to your in ground swimming pool. Whether premanufactured or hand built from stone that can sometimes be found right on your own property your backyard waterfall will provide an attractive way to deliver filtered water back into the pool. When I wanted to add a Jacuzzi to my swimming pool I found it to be price prohibited. So what I did was to build a stone surround Jacuzzi next to my pool then attach the two with a waterfall. The filtered water from the pool is pumped into the Jacuzzi and then finds its way back into the pool by traveling down the waterfall. In addition I installed a diverter valve so I can decide whether to filter both the pool and the jacuzzi or just the jacuzzi. By doing this it will shut down the waterfall and only filter the water in the jacuzzi so I can use the jacuzzi during the cold season when the swimming pool is closed.
